Mama To 4 + K'Pure Natural Body Care
What is your name + what is your company
Karen Johnson of K'pure Naturals
How many kids do you have
I had zero balance the first year of k'pure.
The business was ran out of our home, and completely took over every inch of our house and every minute of my time.
How was K'pure Naturals born
When our third son was a newborn, I took him in for allergy testing because of some unexplained digestive issues. The testing showed abnormal levels of aluminums and parabens in his system which was so shocking to be because he was exclusively breastfed. Turns out what I was putting on my body was being absorbed and entering my breast milk. That was when I started making my own homemade deodorant. Fast forward a few years when I owned a fitness studio. I made a few promo items like lip balm and body scrub at Christmas time to hand out to local businesses with fitness passes. That turned into a small retail shelf at the studio, and the ladies at Bootcamp became my deodorant guinea pigs. That turned into the k'pure website and I eventually sold the studio to focus on k'pure full time.
How do you manage business life + family life + social life
I had zero balance the first year of k'pure. The business was ran out of our home, and completely took over every inch of our house and every minute of my time. Most days were 18-20 hour days. I finally moved the business into a studio space and I feel like we're getting into a new, better normal as a family. I try to keep work time separate from family time by working when the kids are at school or sleeping. I haven't managed to work much of a social life into the mix, but I do try to make time for my extra special friends to keep my own sanity!

What keeps you inspired every day
Trying not to sound cliched but it's 100% my kids. First to be a good example to them and secondly, I work to give myself the freedom to spend as much time with them as possible. To take them to school, activities and on family trips.
What are 3 of your favourite products, and why
Keep Going Essential Oil Spray because it really does give that midday boost of aromatherapy energy.
Perk Up Coffee Scrub for face because it gives an instant glow that looks so great the morning after a long night.
Get Closer Deodorant. This is the star k'pure product and the one that means the most to me. Not only does it "really work', but after I sold the fitness studio, I struggled with the thought of selling deodorant for a living over interacting with and helping women everyday as a personal trainer. However, the feedback we have received from people all over the world, including cancer survivors who have been looking for nontoxic products, and are so grateful to have found our deodorant and products, is my biggest driving force and "why" and it makes all the late nights and long days so worth it!
How do you spend some "you time"
I get up before the rest of the family to get my workouts in. It clears my head and curbs my anxiety. Also, going for runs has always been when my best ideas are hatched!
What are some of your daily rituals
I'm a morning person, so most of my rituals happen first thing. My workout, smoothie and shower come first. These may sound mundane, but I recently had a paradigm shift where instead of looking at things as a routine, I look at them as a ritual. So mundane things like washing my face are part of a ritual so I no longer feel tempted to skip them. It's all about perspective!
Do you have any beauty DIY tips you'd like to share with mamas
Beauty and skincare don't have to be complicated or overly scientific! Most of us have ingredients in our homes that make amazing beauty treatments. Try adding honey or avocado to your favourite masque for hair or skin.
Out of your favourite scrub? Grab some organic sugar from the pantry and mix it with some coconut oil for a simple body scrub, or this morning's coffee grinds as a uplifting face scrub (just make sure it's a fine grind!). Looking and feeling good doesn't have to cost a fortune!
