A Rad Shop By A Rad Mom
Instagram… sometimes you find + virtually meet the coolest kindest people, just like this mama who runs Shop MCLC. She’s inspirational, and does it all with a beautiful sense of style, a passion for inspiring women + while giving back to the community.
What’s your name, and how many kids do you have
My full name is Jacqueline Velasquez but go by Jacky. I have 2 boys. Micah is 8-years-old and Lucah is 2-years-old
What is your business + how did you get inspired to start it
My business is MCLC. MC is my oldest’s initials and LC is my youngest’s initials! I design and create tees and shoes and some accessories. MCLC is well known for The Mama Shoes. I have been in the “fashion” industry ever since I was 18 and have always been creative. Once I became a stay at home mom, I realized I needed some sort of creative outlet. Shortly after, I started seeing a lot of “mom shops” and told myself that I could definitely do it. I wanted my brand to be empowering to mothers, women, and families. I also wanted to change the world and better it for my kiddos, thus donating to nonprofit organizations.
Now that the business is up and running, what does “balance” (or lack of) look like for you
Balance is probably the hardest part of running a business. I am a stay at home mom and a homeschool parent aka teacher. My days are full to say the least. I definitely prioritize my kids and my business second. I tend to work while the kids nap or from the hours of midnight-3am. I’m still learning how to balance being a mom and a business owner. I know I’ll eventually get there but it’s still a work in progress.
What’s at least one of your favourite things about running your own business + what is one of your struggles
I love being able to let out my creativity at my own pace. It’s really fulfilling to see a positive response to something so dear to my heart. I have also really enjoyed connecting with other small shops, moms and women through social media. We are all coming up together and supporting each other.
Currently, the Instagram algorithm is killing me. It’s unfortunate that Instagram decided to take that route. It really hurts mom and pop shops that are too small to spend tons of money on marketing.
What is something you do just for yourself/what does self care look like for you
Self care for me is doing yoga, pilates, listening to music, going to concerts, binge watching shows, and hanging out with friends. I like to take at least 30 minutes to myself to get myself together mentally.
Something you know now, that you wish you knew before you became a mama
Motherhood is not all rainbows and butterflies. Motherhood can also mean loneliness, crying sessions, defeat. Every mother has a different situation. Speaking for myself, I have had days where I feel helpless. There are days that I feel defeated and don’t know where to turn. Motherhood is exceptionally wonderful and amazing, but there are also difficult moments that no one can prepare you for.
What does support look like for you
I turn to my family for support. My hubby is extremely supportive in everything I do and is a super fun Dad!
I also turn to my mom, sisters, and in-laws. Without them, things would definitely be a lot harder.
Any advice for mama’s wanting to start their own business
Just go for it! I always tell myself that I don’t want to grow old and regret things. I don’t want to look back and say “I wish I would have…”
